Sustainable Business Development
TDI works in various areas of sustainable business development. For example, we work together with NGO's such as WWF (Indonesia, China) and ICCO (Brazil, Colombia, Papua New Guinea). To us 'sustainability' is to be considered from both the socio-economical and from the environmental point of view.
For sustainable business development TDI works on scientific as well as technological aspects and furthermore, product and marketing issues are addressed during all stages. Below we have listed some of TDI's sustainable projects.
Are you interested to join TDI in these projects? Some of the projects and product developments are available for further partnerships. Please feel free to inquire by mail or telephone.
Examples of projects:
Sumatra, Indonesia (2007). As a result of an economic scoping mission in 2006 for WWF, TDI initiated a feasibility study, partially funded by the Dutch government, to investigate the possibility of building an industry around - but at a safe distance of - the Tesso Nilo National Park for making cassava starch and animal feed. Also as part of this study several annual fiber crops will be investigated for their use in paper and pulp industry. Local partners in the study are WWF, APRIL (paper&pulp) and CECOM (a community development organisation set up by local companies). The objective is to create many jobs that will form an alternative to illegal logging and other illegal activities that threat the rainforest.
Shaanxi, China (2006). TDI has carried out an economic scoping mission for WWF to the Qinling mountain range near Xi'an. The goal of the mission was to identify potential business development options, including potential for eco-tourism.
TDI takes part in the follow-up of some of the identified options, one of which will be to develop the production facility for bottled water. The business/marketing model will aim to have a percentage of profits to flow back to the nature reserves in Qinling.
Sumatra, Indonesia (2006). TDI has carried out an economic scoping mission for WWF to the Tesso Nilo National Park in Central Sumatra. The goal of the mission was to identify potential business development options within reach of the local residents around Tesso Nilo. The development options ranged from agriculture to setting up medium-sized industries. TDI takes part in the follow-up of some of the identified options.
Sri Lanka - Coco peat (2002-now). TDI has developed a new process to cheaply produce cocos peat for large scale horticulture applications. The cocos peat is produced at a facility in Sri Lanka by our TDI-subsidiary Bucotec BV. TDI is also involved in other products originating from coco wood.
Starch production in Brazil (2005-2006). TDI - in partnership with ICCO and Banco do Brasil - has analyzed the socio-economic and technical feasibility of building a starch production facility in the Northwest of Brazil. The factory should be run by a cooperation of local farmers, thereby contributing to substantial poverty alleviation in the area.
Peanut butter factory in Papua New Guinea (2004). TDI has been involved for ICCO in a feasibility study and business plan for restarting peanut butter production in Papua New Guinea.
